How to Get More Google Reviews Without Awkwardly Asking

November 02, 2026•3 min read

You do great work. Your customers tell you so in person. Then you check your Google profile and see a handful of reviews from two years ago.

That gap is normal, and it is fixable. Happy customers are not refusing to review you. They are busy, and they forget. The fix is not asking harder. It is asking at the right moment, in the right way, every single time.

Why reviews matter so much for local trades

When a homeowner searches “AC repair near me,” they see a list of companies with star ratings and review counts. Before they read a single word on your website, they are already comparing you on those two numbers.

Reviews also help you show up in that list in the first place. Recent, steady reviews are one of the signals that help local businesses rank in Google’s map results.

So reviews do two jobs at once: they get you seen, and they get you picked.

The real reason you are not getting reviews

Most shops ask for reviews like this: occasionally, verbally, at the end of a job, with no follow-up. “If you were happy, we would love a review!” The customer says “of course,” means it, and never does it.

The problem is not the customer. It is that the ask depends on someone remembering, and the review depends on the customer remembering later. Two memories in a row is a recipe for nothing.

A simple system that works

1. Ask at the moment of peak happiness

The best time to ask is right after the job is finished, when the problem is fixed and the customer is relieved. Not a week later when the invoice arrives.

2. Make it one tap

Send a text with a direct link to your Google review form. No searching for your business, no extra steps. The fewer taps, the more reviews.

“Thanks for choosing Rivera HVAC today, Sarah! If we did a good job, would you mind leaving a quick review? It really helps a small business like ours: [link]”

Short, personal, and easy.

3. Follow up once

If there is no review after two or three days, send one gentle reminder. Then stop. Plenty of people meant to do it the first time and simply forgot, so one nudge catches them without being pushy.

4. Make it automatic

This is the part that changes everything. When the request is triggered automatically when a job is marked complete, it goes out every time, for every customer, without anyone remembering.

That is how shops go from a trickle of reviews to a steady stream.

Should you ask everyone?

Yes. Ask every customer, not just the ones you think loved you. Google’s guidelines say you should not filter who gets asked based on whether they will leave a positive review, and honestly, a steady flow of real reviews looks more trustworthy than a perfect wall of 5 stars.

If someone had a bad experience, you want to know. That gives you a chance to fix it.

Reply to every review

Replying shows future customers that a real person runs the business.

  • For positive reviews: thank them by name and mention the service. “Thanks, Sarah! Glad we got your AC running before the heat wave.”
  • For negative reviews: stay calm, apologize for the experience, and take it offline. We will cover this in detail in an upcoming post.

What a review system can do

One SkaleHub client, Molly Maid, tripled their 5-star Google reviews in 60 days after they started sending automated review requests after every job. Same great work as before. The only change was asking every customer, every time, at the right moment.
