Most new investors make the same mistake: they treat every dollar the same way. Either everything goes into one hot stock, or everything sits in cash because the market feels scary. A better approach is to give your money three speeds, each with its own job.
This is the bulk of your portfolio, often 60–80%. It lives in broad, low-cost index funds that own hundreds or thousands of companies at once. The core isn't supposed to be exciting. Its job is to capture the long-term growth of the overall market while you sleep.
The rules for the core are simple: buy regularly, rebalance on a schedule (monthly or quarterly), and don't touch it because of a scary headline. Some investors add a basic trend filter, for example moving part of the core to cash or bonds when the index closes below its 200-day moving average, to soften the worst drawdowns. That's optional, but if you use one, write the rule down before you need it.
The satellite, around 15–25%, is where you get more selective. Instead of owning the whole market, you hold a focused basket of strong companies, typically chosen by clear criteria like earnings quality, healthy balance sheets, and positive price momentum. You review it on a slower cadence, such as quarterly, and swap out names that no longer pass your screen.
The key word is criteria. If you can't explain in one sentence why a stock is in the satellite, it doesn't belong there.
The sleeve is the 5–10% where higher-risk ideas live: momentum trades, small caps, swing setups. It's reviewed weekly and it's allowed to lose money. That's the point. By capping it at a small slice, you get to learn, take shots, and scratch the itch to trade without putting your long-term plan at risk.
A common rule: if the sleeve grows past its target, trim the excess back into the core. If it gets wiped out, you don't refill it from the core until you've reviewed what went wrong.
Pick your split (70/20/10 is a reasonable starting point), write down the rules for each speed, and put the review dates on your calendar. The structure matters more than the exact percentages. You can adjust as you learn how much risk you're actually comfortable with.
