5 Guardrails for Using an AI Assistant With Your Brokerage Account

October 30, 2026•3 min read

Connecting an AI assistant like Claude to a brokerage account is powerful. It can screen stocks, pull fundamentals, check news, calculate position sizes, and keep a trade journal in seconds. But speed cuts both ways. Before you let any AI near real money, set these five guardrails.

1. Use a separate, dedicated account

Never connect an AI to your main investment account. Open a separate account with an amount you're genuinely comfortable putting at risk, and keep your long-term savings somewhere it can't reach. If something goes wrong, the damage is capped by design.

2. Start with paper trading or approval-only mode

Run your strategy on paper first, or require the AI to ask for your approval before every order. Watch how it behaves over a few weeks: Does it follow your rules? Does it explain its reasoning? Only after you trust the process should you consider letting it execute any trades on its own, and even then, only for narrow, well-defined strategies.

3. Write the rules down in one place

An AI assistant is only as disciplined as its instructions. Keep a single rules file that spells out exactly what it may trade, maximum position size, risk per trade, required stop-losses, and what it must never do. Vague goals like "make money" invite risky behavior. Specific rules like "risk no more than 1% per trade and always place a stop at entry" don't.

4. Require a stop-loss on every trade

Every position should have an exit defined before it's opened. Make the stop part of the order process, not an afterthought. This single rule prevents most catastrophic losses.

5. Keep a journal and review it

Have the assistant log every trade: entry, exit, size, reason, and outcome. Review it weekly. A journal shows you whether the strategy is working, whether the rules are being followed, and where things went wrong, which is impossible to see from memory.

The bottom line

AI is excellent at the tedious parts of investing: research, screening, math, and record-keeping. The judgment about how much to risk, and whether a strategy deserves real money at all, stays with you. Set the guardrails first, then let the assistant do the heavy lifting.
